Your complaints go way beyond the physical aspects of his person. You seem like a girl who needs to be with someone a little more positive and ertive. Even though it is a general good rule to live and let live, the things he is doing fall into a category of apathy and little concern for his future. Your mom may be looking at the very limited positive aspects he may still have but in the short and long run, the one who is in charge of your life is YOU! You're looking at things from the correct perspective and deserve much better than this 'loser'. Kudos to you for not having fallen into the complacency of accepting him 'just because'. You deserve much better no matter what your mom opines!
