How painful is the cleansing for preparation for a colonoscopy?

My 3 year old son is scheduled for a colonoscopy on friday. He has to take laxatives to cleanse his vowels and can only have liquids on thursday. The laxatives sounds painful and i don't know how he will go about not eating for the whole day. Has anyone else gone through this?
